"Listening in real time to an interview creates a pact of intimacy between speaker and listener and an accompanying sense of "liveness" not found in print."

The above quote by Siobhán McHugh reflects our goals for this project. We hope that listeners and readers gain another dimension in understanding the perspectives and history of locals across the Upper and Lower Gotō Islands. They touch on various themes related to memories about the Hidden Christians, memories of the interviewees, as well as traumas of the past.

Users may toggle between the original Japanese transcripts and English translation using the EN/JP button on the main menu of the webpage. Suggested citations for each interview are offered at the end of each transcript. The full project interviews, which may be published at a future date, are more extensive and include additional non-Catholic and non-Hidden Christian interviewees.
