About the Film:
"1923" is the first South Korean documentary to directly confront the long-concealed massacre of Koreans that occurred in the immediate aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Through extensive research and new materials from Japan, Korea, and the West, the film explores why rumors spread during the chaos and why ordinary citizens turned into violent "vigilante groups." Even after 100 years, the facts remain largely unspoken in official narratives. This film illuminates the darkness of discrimination, the demonization of immigrants, and the power structures that fuel them. The social climate of 100 years ago—marked by the spread of disinformation, intolerance, hatred, and state-sanctioned violence—bears a striking resemblance to our world today. "1923" is more than a historical record; it challenges us to reflect on how we are living in our own communities today. The film is narrated by acclaimed actor Kim Eui-sung (known for 12.12: The Day). It also features interviews with various public figures, including former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, who discuss the depth of this issue and potential paths toward resolution.

この作品は、1923年の関東大震災直後に起きた「朝鮮人虐殺」という、長く隠蔽されてきた事件に真正面から向き合うため韓国で制作された最初のドキュメンタリーです。震災の混乱の中でなぜデマが広がり、なぜ普通の市民が「自警団」として暴走してしまったのかを問う本作は、日韓及び欧米での膨大な取材と新資料に基づき、100年以上経った今もなお、この事実が公に語り継がれない背景にある「差別」、「移民の悪魔化」やそれを生み出した「権力構造」の闇を浮き彫りにします。SNSでデマが拡散し、他者への不寛容が世界的に広がる現代の社会状況は、100年前と驚くほど似ています。この映画は単なる歴史の記録ではなく、過去のケースを通じて、今、私たちがそれぞれの場所でどう生きるべきかを問いかけてきます。ナレーションは、映画『ソウルの春』などでも知られる名優キム・ウィソン氏が担当。また、鳩山由紀夫氏を始め、多くの著名人も出演し、この問題の根深さと解決への糸口を語っています。
