Project Launch: Teaching Tea: Culture, History, Practice, Art
Japan Past & Present is pleased to announce the formal launch of the project Teaching Tea: Culture, History, Practice, Art. Led by Dr. Rebecca Corbett (University of Southern California) and Dr. Michelle Liu Carriger (UCLA), Teaching Tea began with a symposium held from April 27–28, 2024 that brought together nineteen scholars and tea practitioners to discuss the complexities of teaching chanoyu (“tea culture” or “tea ceremony”) in higher education settings. Participants in the symposium have prepared a rich collection of approachable peer-reviewed essays, lesson plans, photographs, reading lists, and other pedagogically useful resources for researchers and educators alike. Teaching Tea features contributions from a diverse range of researchers and practitioners that will only continue to grow.
The Teaching Tea organizers and participants would like to express their gratitude for support from the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, JAPAN House Los Angeles, the USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture, the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies, the Japan Foundation, the Terasaki Center for Japanese Studies UCLA, and the Hiroshi Wagatsuma Memorial Fellowship of the UCLA Asia Pacific Center.
