I am a historian of medieval Japan and currently a professor of History at College of Arts, Rikkyo University in Tokyo.
I'm also interested in historiography of Japanese history research abroad and comparative history, having served as a visiting scholar at the Department of History, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, a visiting academic at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge, and a fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), Bielefeld University.
My primary area of expertise is the diplomatic (paleography) and legal social history of early medieval Japan (11th-14th centuries), specifically examining the practices of people during this period and how they created and utilized law and documents.
Currently, I am trying to elucidate the mechanisms behind the proliferation of these conflicts, while the medieval period was an era marked by frequent disputes and lawsuits.
My interests extend to both the comparative historical research of Kan'ichi Asakawa (1873-1948), a significant contributor in the USA, and to modern historiography, where I explores how medieval history has been studied and understood in contemporary society.
I am also interested in history education and re-evaluating the relationship between historical research and society.
My research achievements can be found on my Researchmap page. https://researchmap.jp/read0142021
