A historian of medieval Japan (12th to 16th centuries), I have published on commerce, trade, and money in East Asia, emerging identities and proto-nationalism, and the ways that Japanese historical figures and periods are depicted in popular culture. I am currently working on issues of women's status and gender in the Kamakura period and on aspects of economic thought across the medieval era. I am also involved in outreach efforts including helping K-12 schoolteachers learn more about East Asia and bring content into their classrooms.
