JFT Book Club: Seesaw Monster by ISAKA Kotaro

For the upcoming JFT Book Club (Hybrid), we will discuss ISAKA Kotaro’s : Seesaw Monster* (The original Japanese version: 伊坂幸太郎著『シーソーモンスター』, translated into English by Sam Malissa) . The author ISAKA Kotaro is one of Japan’s most popular mystery/thriller authors, known for his dark wit and intricate storytelling, and a featured guest at this year’s Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA).

*We will cover both novellas in the book, Seesaw Monster and Spin Monster.

Blending humor, suspense, and social insight, this inventive short story collection connects two seemingly different worlds: a humorous yet sharp “mother-in-law vs. daughter-in-law” domestic battle set in 1980s Japan, and a thrilling near-future tale of AI and power struggles. Together, they explore timeless questions about conflict, understanding, and coexistence.
